We are so excited you have decided to join us in our efforts to live healthier in 2006 and beyond! (And when we say us, we mean it. Most of the Grand Brands team will be participating in the Challenge too!).
True Lemon’s free Healthy New Year Challenge is not a diet and it’s not about depriving yourself. Its focus is entirely on incorporating (or increasing) three important habits into your life that can help you be healthier, have more energy and help you lose weight. These habits-
- drinking more water;
- eating more fruits and vegetables; and
- move your body more
-are described as some of the most important by many dietitians, nutritionists, physicians and healthcare organizations. However, the recommended servings of water (64 ounces or eight cups a day) and fruits and vegetables (8 per day) and the recommendation of 30 to 45 minutes of exercise four times per week can seem so overwhelming and unattainable that many of us don’t even really try.
The message of the True Lemon Challenge (which kicks off January 1st and will run through the year) is different. We don’t expect that suddenly you will now met each of those recommendations. Instead, the focus of the Challenge is to build from wherever you are now and add these healthy habits into your life gradually. If you’re currently drinking only two glasses of water per day, make your goal to increase your water consumption by one glass or two glasses during the first month of the Challenge. (And True Lemon is a great way to drink more water without changing your water into something artificial.) If you’re not eating any fruits and vegetables regularly, make your goal to eat at least two servings of fruit or vegetable per day during the first month. If you do not exercise on a regular basis, make your goal to move your body 20 minutes per day three days a week during January. Again, the point is to focus on healthy living goals that are realistic for you and for your life. When you achieve those goals, it will be easier to create and reach your next healthy living goals. (Remember: it takes six to eight weeks to create a lasting habit.)
To support us in our efforts, Jill Fleming, RD, a leading nutritionist, consultant, motivational speaker, and author of Thin People Don’t Clean Their Plates: Simple Lifestyle Changes for Permanent Weight Loss, will be providing tips, answering your questions and participating in our blog (an online journal). Jill is the founder of the movement to end obesity in America with her THIN CHOICES strategies. She has helped thousand of people move from the diet mentality to the THIN CHOICES way of living. Jill is a member of The American Dietetics Association, Nutrition Entrepreneurs Practice Group, and The National Speakers Association. Other nutritionists will be contributing columns and tips to the Challenge to help all of us be successful.
