Healthy Tips for Summertime Enjoyment
by Keri Glassman, RD
Summertime not only means shorts and bathing suits, but also traveling, traffic, and barbeques as well as after work cocktails. All of these plans can make it hard to stick to your healthy diet through the beautiful sunny weather! Even though we’re putting on much more revealing clothes, with all these traps, it can be easy to have your diet sabotaged during the summer months. But you can still enjoy the hot summer days without packing on the pounds! Try to follow these few simple tips to help when traveling, on summer outings and to keep you cool!
When traveling:
- Drink lots of water. When you're traveling, dehydration causes fatigue and worsens jet lag. Plus, it's especially important in hot weather to keep the body cool! Even if you don’t feel “thirsty”, remember to keep drinking throughout the day. Water also is essential for any weight loss plan. (And True Lemon, True Lime and True Orange make water refreshing!)
- Pack your own snacks! Being prepared with your own healthy snacks is a key to sticking to a healthy eating plan. By snacking, you will keep your blood sugar stabilized, and your metabolism revved. Being prepared with a small Ziploc of almonds or an apple in your bag, purse, or car will help you avoid the drive through on your way to the beach and the extra serving of chips once you get there!
- Get up, stretch and move! If you're on a plane, walk in the aisle or through the airport before boarding. If you’re on a long car trip, take a moment while you’re getting gas to get out of the car and move around a little.
- Try to have a "real meal" before you board a plane, head to the airport, or jump in the car for a long trip.
To stay cool:
- Eat smaller portions more often. In the hot weather it’s natural for us to want to eat “lighter”. Use this to your advantage and eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. This will keep your hunger level in check, your energy up, and make you feel better overall!
- Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Because they have high water content, you will not only be getting your vitamins, but will be helping you remain hydrated also!
- At work, take water breaks instead of coffee breaks. Keep a water bottle on your desk as well, to remind you to keep sipping!
At barbeques and parties:
- Never go to a barbeque or party starving—try to have a healthy and balanced snack before you go. By not being so ravenous you will be able to make better choices and not just go for the first thing you see.
- Fill up your plate only once, and try to make half of it filled with veggies.
- Offer to bring a healthy dish—your host and your waistline will be grateful!
By following these simple suggestions, you’ll have a great summer and ensure you’re staying healthy!
